Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam (MTM)

ome-based services for Non-Communicable Diseases under “Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam” (MTM) addresses the growing burden of Non-Communicable Diseases aimed at improving treatment compliance and disease control. The Women Health Volunteers (WHVs) of the Self-Help Group network provides preliminary screening services for Hypertension and Diabetes. They also provide doorstep delivery of HT & DM medicines to eligible beneficiaries aged 45 years and above. The STEPS II survey has complemented that 43.7% of Hypertension patients and 39.6% of Diabetes patients have availed Home-based services.

PICME

PICME 3.0, Tamil Nadu’s real-time digital cohort-tracking system, follows every pregnancy from registration to delivery, immunization and childhood — risk-stratifying every mother and cutting inappropriate birth planning by 88%.

CHILD HEALTH

With an IMR of 11 and NMR of 8, Tamil Nadu leads the nation in child survival — backed by a complete care network from Newborn Care Corners at every birth to SNCUs, PICUs, milk banks and 7 lakh home-based newborn care visits.

MATERNAL HEALTH

With an MMR of 25 and 99.7% institutional deliveries, Tamil Nadu drives towards a single-digit MMR — tracking every high-risk mother in real time through its State War Room and assuring free, quality childbirth care for every mother.

The National Leprosy Eradication Programme (NLEP)

The National Leprosy Eradication Programme (NLEP) is a Centrally Sponsored Scheme implemented under the National Health Mission (NHM). The programme provides comprehensive, free-of-cost services for the prevention, early detection, diagnosis, and treatment of leprosy, along with disability prevention and rehabilitation of persons affected by leprosy and post-exposure prophylaxis for eligible contacts, through all government health facilities across the State. Aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the WHO Global Leprosy Strategy, the programme strives to achieve zero transmission, zero disability, and zero discrimination by 2027.

National Rabies Control Programme (NRCP)

Rabies is a fatal yet entirely preventable viral zoonotic disease transmitted primarily through the bite or scratch of an infected animal, particularly dogs. Once clinical symptoms appear, rabies is almost always fatal. Timely wound washing, administration of Anti-Rabies Vaccine (ARV), and Rabies Immunoglobulin (RIG), when indicated, can prevent the disease.

TAMIL NADU ACCIDENT AND EMERGENCY CARE INITIATIVE

Tamil Nadu Accident and Emergency Care Initiative (TAEI) has revolutionized the concept of Emergency Medical Care in Tamil Nadu and has become a role model for other states across the country. The initiative introduced standardized emergency care protocols, modern infrastructure, and improved patient care systems across government hospitals.

National Mental Health Programme – (NMHP)

Tamil Nadu, one of the Southern states in India, stands out for its robust health infrastructure that extends beyond physical health to include comprehensive Mental Health services. The State has made commendable strides in ensuring that Mental Health services are accessible at every level of care, from primary to tertiary, including specialized de-addiction services. What sets Tamil Nadu apart is its commitment to providing these services free of cost, reinforcing its dedication to the well-being of its citizens.
