Prime Minister National Dialysis Programme (PMNDP)

Enhancing Access to Quality Dialysis Care

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) has emerged as a major public health challenge, requiring early detection, continuous monitoring, and timely treatment to prevent progression to End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD). Patients with ESRD require lifelong dialysis, often facing challenges such as frequent hospital visits, disruption to work or education, and substantial out-of-pocket expenditure (OOPE).

Recognizing the growing burden of kidney disease, Tamil Nadu has prioritized equitable access to affordable dialysis services across the State. Through strategic expansion of dialysis infrastructure, the State has emerged as one of the leading performers in India in terms of haemodialysis availability, ensuring services reach both urban and rural populations.

Under the Prime Minister National Dialysis Programme (PMNDP), dialysis services have been strengthened across Government Medical College Hospitals, District Headquarters Hospitals, Taluk and Non-Taluk Hospitals, with additional centres functioning through Public–Private Partnership (PPP) arrangements in the Greater Chennai Corporation and Chengalpattu.

Impact at a Glance (April 2025 – March 2026)

146 Dialysis Centres operational
1,400+ Haemodialysis Machines installed
9+ Lakh Haemodialysis sessions conducted
9,400+ Patients benefited

Expanding Access Beyond Hospitals

Tamil Nadu has also pioneered a community-based Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD) initiative under the Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam programme. This innovative home-based dialysis model enables patients to perform dialysis independently, with CAPD consumables delivered directly to their homes.

350+ beneficiaries have received doorstep delivery of CAPD supplies, improving treatment adherence, reducing travel to hospitals, supporting an ambulant lifestyle, and enhancing quality of life.

Further, the inclusion of CAPD under the Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme (CMCHIS) has significantly reduced the financial burden on patients by minimizing out-of-pocket expenditure.

Towards Better Kidney Care

By strengthening dialysis infrastructure, expanding services to secondary healthcare facilities, promoting innovative home-based dialysis, and reducing financial barriers, Tamil Nadu continues to advance comprehensive and patient-centred kidney care, ensuring timely, affordable, and accessible treatment for individuals living with Chronic Kidney Disease.
