NATIONAL PROGRAMME FOR PREVENTION AND CONTROL OF FLUOROSIS (NPPCF)
Fluorosis is a major Public Health problem caused by prolonged consumption of excess fluoride through contaminated drinking water, food products, or industrial exposure. In Tamil Nadu, fluoride contamination of groundwater remains a concern in several districts, particularly in areas dependent solely on borewell water. Chronic exposure can lead to Dental and Skeletal fluorosis, causing deformities, disability, and reduced quality of life, especially among children and vulnerable populations.
The National Programme for Prevention and Control of Fluorosis (NPPCF) has been implemented in Dharmapuri district since 2008 for surveillance, early diagnosis, management, and rehabilitation of fluorosis cases. In view of the continued burden, expansion of the programme to four additional affected districts is proposed.
Programme activities include:
-
- Surveillance of fluorosis in the community and school children.
- Capacity building in the form of training and man power support.
- Diagnostic facilities in the form of laboratory support & equipment including ion meter to monitor the fluoride content in water and urinary levels; health education.
- Rehabilitation services by providing free mobility aids like crutches, wheel chairs, tricycle
In the year 2025-26, 1,512 water samples were tested for fluoride levels against the target of 1,508 samples. Medical management, including supplementation, was provided to all 1,103 diagnosed fluorosis cases, achieving 100% coverage against the target of 90%. There were no cases requiring Surgery or Rehabilitation support during the year.
The proposed expansion of NPPCF will further strengthen surveillance, early detection, community awareness, and timely management of fluorosis cases in affected districts.
