As\ndisease prevalence continued to\nrise, Multi-Drug Therapy (MDT),\ncomprising Rifampicin, Clofazimine,\nand Dapsone, was introduced in\n1983. Following the adoption of\nMDT, the programme was renamed\nthe National Leprosy Eradication\nProgramme (NLEP).In the year 2005, TN achieved PR less\nthan 1\/10,000. <strong>The vision is Zero Leprosy, Zero Deformity and Zero Stigma with the goal of interruption of disease transmission by 2027.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"nhm-hero-image\">\n<div style=\"display:flex;justify-content:center;\">\n<video controls autoplay muted loop playsinline style=\"width:100%; max-width:400px; height:auto; border-radius:10px;\">\n    <source src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/WhatsApp-Video-2026-07-21-at-3.21.38-PM.mp4\" type=\"video\/mp4\">\n    Your browser does not support the video tag.\n<\/video>\n<\/div><br>\n<div class=\"nhm-highlight-stat\">\n\n<div class=\"big\">2027<\/div>\nTarget Year for Interruption of Disease Transmission\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3>Case Detection\u00a0 Activities:<\/h3>\n<div class=\"info-box\">\n\nIn order to strengthen leprosy case detection,a dual strategy comprising Active and Passive Case Detection is being implemented across Tamil Nadu.\n\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"card-grid\">\n<div class=\"info-card\">\n<h4>Active Case Finding<\/h4>\nSlum Surveys, Saturday Surveys,\nschool surveys conducted by field\nstaff, LCDC surveys, WHV-ASHA\ncamps, and contact surveys.\n\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"info-card\">\n<h4>Passive Case Finding<\/h4>\nReferred by PHC\/UPHC, Government\nhospitals, Govt. and Private Hospitals,\nNGOs, and voluntarily reported cases.\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3>Treatment<\/h3>\n<div class=\"nhm-section-alt\">\n\nMulti drug therapy is given to new leprosy cases. For Paucibacillary (PB) cases,the duration is 6 months, and for\u00a0 Multibacillary (MB)cases,the duration is 12 months. Leprosy reaction cases are identified and followed by Medical Officer of Primary Health Centres by giving tapering doses of steroids.\n\n<\/div>\n<h3>Disability Prevention<\/h3>\n<div class=\"info-box\">\n\nDisability due to leprosy is a major concern because of stigma associated with it. So prevention of disability is possible through early case detection, adequate treatment with Multi Drug Therapy (MDT) and regular follow up. Disability commonly affects the eye, hands, and feet.\n\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"program-block\">\n\n<strong>Disability Prevention and Medical Rehabilitation (DPMR)<\/strong>\n\nTo prevent disability among treated cases disability prevention and medical rehabilitation (DMPR) camp is organised in all health facilities in which ulcer dressing, physiotherapy, self-care practices and aids and appliances are provided.\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"section\">\n<h3>Reconstructive Surgery (RCS)<\/h3>\n<div class=\"program-block\">\n\nReconstructive Surgery (RCS) is done for eligible deformity cases to improve function of the affected part and incentive of Rs.12000\/- also given to those who undergone RCS.\n\n<\/div>\n<h3>Beneficiary Support Initiatives<\/h3>\n<div class=\"card-grid\">\n<div class=\"info-card\">\n<h4>Leprosy Cured Maintenance Grant (LCMG)<\/h4>\nThe Government of Tamil Nadu is providing LCMG of Rs.2000\/- to Leprosy afflicted person (LAP) with deformity of 40% and above.\n\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"info-card\">\n<h4>Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP)<\/h4>\nTo prevent leprosy among House Hold, Neighbourhood and Social contacts of new leprosy cases single dose Rifampicin (SDR) is given as Post exposure prophylaxis.\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3>Leprosy Free Status<\/h3>\n<div class=\"nhm-banner\">\n\nLeprosy free status means attaining no child cases for first 5 years and no adult cases for next 3 years.
