These units provide preventive, promotive, and curative healthcare services, including maternal and child health care, disease screening, basic laboratory tests, immunization, and free medicines.\nCurrently, Tamil Nadu operates 396 Rural MMUs, 10 Urban MMUs, and 20 Tribal MMUs. Within the Greater Chennai Corporation, five MMU teams serve vulnerable populations living in slums, resettlement colonies, and other underserved urban areas.\nTribal MMUs function in 14 districts to provide healthcare services to remote tribal communities. Each unit is staffed by a Medical Officer, Staff Nurse, Laboratory Technician, and Driver, ensuring accessible and timely healthcare.
